Thanks for the tip Rob - much appreciated. :)

I've been trying to prise this amp off Ian for a good 12 months now, and finally managed it today. It works a treat - and sounds (from a slightly faded memory) not too dissimilar to the little KEL I onced owned. Lovely. :)

The internals are almost identical to the KAT6550 so with a few simple mods you can run 6550 or KT88s in the amp.
If you ever want to go down that path give me a shout as I have all of the old WAD conversion papers and build manuals.

Thanks Rob - I'll un-bolt the front panel and have a look-see at what's behind it. If I did convert from KaT to KiT I'd need to drill a couple of extra holes in the rear panel to add more input sockets. Not too concerned about a tape-out as my DAC has a very acceptable headphone output. Saying that, I'm running the passive pre into the amp with only 30cm interconnects so I probably wouldn't gain much (if anything) apart from losing another box.

I'm going to try a set of 5881's in the amp soon - I have it on good authority (from someone who's hot-rodded a KaT34) that these strike a good compromise between the EL34's and KT88's. I'm not convinced where 88's are concerned tbh - never heard an 88-equipped amp which I've liked.

Bottom line though, this amp sounds wonderful and I'm a happy bunny. :)

Hi Richard,

I can't imagine you would get any benefit by not using the NVA, other than a lower box count and less wiring but it should sound the same.

IIRC EL34 and 5881 are closely related tubes.
6550 and KT88s certainly are and share very similar internal construction so you shouldn't get a large swing in sound character between them. Having said that not all tubes are created equal so you can get great KT88s from one company and mediocre ones from another.
FWIW I used 'Winged C' Svetlana KT88s in my WAD amp and they sounded superb. Remember that you do need to make some simple internal changes if swapping to the bigger tubes.
Those are a nice family of amps though with excellent overrated transformers and excellent choke smoothed valve PSUs.
My Kit6550 is currently up in the frozen northern wastelands with Jonathan R on a nice long holiday.

Hi Joe - what does your rig consist of? I think I can see a Roksan turntable (correct me if I'm wrong!). :)

Big changes at Gromit Towers - yes, I know I know, I'd got myself a lovely WAD KaT34 in nigh in mint condition and was all up for building a neat little system around it. Big problem was, Peter at Noteworthy Audio received (in part/ex) the pre-amp I've aspired to own for something like 15 years now - an Exposure IX/XIV. I never thought I'd see one, let alone own one. Part of this package was a IV Dual-reg power amp. The IX & IV have both very recently had a full re-cap at Exposure with original (NOS) caps so I've effectively got a nearly-new amp.

A few folk know I'm a big fan of the Farlowe-era Exposure amps. JF's amplification (of varying size and sophistication) has powered the sounds in my living room for 16 out of the last 20 years - with this set-up it feels like I've come home...

Hi Gromit

As you spotted, a Roksan X turntable, with Rega RB600 arm and Van den Hul Frog Gold cartridge. Rest of the system is Tom Evans Audio Design Groove phono amp and Vibe pre-amp; Meridian 500CD transport, Chord DAC64; Border Patrol 300B SE power amp. Speakers are Audiovector M3 Signatures. The record playing is 'Can't Buy a Thrill' by Steely Dan.

Will post a picture of the 'upstairs' system soon. That's Exposure-based!

Rega P9/Tecnoweight/AT33PTG
Quad 34
Quad 306
Quad FM4
Quad ESL
Audiosmile DEQ24/96 (DAC/ADC - music streamed from Macbook Pro)
Audiosmile diffusors and bass traps.
Revox B77

Great system, beautiful speakers. BUT it is being strangled by the 34, I had a 44 and changing it for a Croft (or any modern pre) just let through so much more info.

Have you tried others pre amps in your system?

Just joined the forum so thought I'd introduce myself. Here's a picture of my system but it's going to change any day soon as I'm getting a new cd player. The Linn has a new black plinth which makes it look much better and matches the rest of the kit.

Linn LP12/Mose Hercules 2 PSU with Origin Live Silver Mk2 arm and Denon DL110 cart

Naim "Avondaled" NAC62 with Naim "Avondaled Dual Rail SNAPS and Naim NAP250 power amp

Linn Kan Mk1's

Linn Karik CD player & Linn Numerik DAC

Sounds pretty good but I know it's going to get a lot better :D

I've just joined the forum, and am introducing myself to everyone. I like music in a big way, though I have never studied it. I often go to concerts and still buy CDs. I attach a picture of the room where I have the audio equipment.

It is all 8 years old, and I'm looking forward to making it sound better without wasting any money over it. Clearly, I'll be working my way slowly over the choices.

Best wishes,

Michael

Lovely looking Eclipse Theo and I hope it sounds as good as it looks. Funny thing is I bought my Linn from the chap who makes them turntables and spent a very pleasureable afternnon having it delivered and set up by him a while ago and I wished him all the best in his new adventure then. I thought I'd upload a picture of my system as it is now as it has changed from the one above and it'll be staying that way for a good while now :)

Yes, Bob at Inspire is a top bloke. I actually sold my LP12 to buy the Eclipse; it just sounded better to me. Far more coherent, less coloured, but with that sense of 'propulsion' that the best Rega decks have. The SME/Ortofon combination is superb - I love it. I'm on a massive 2nd hand vinyl buying spree at present, and re-acquainting myself with my existing collection.

My system is staying now - journey's end...

The Eclipse is well out of my price bracket and I've always liked the "Linn" sound. I must buck the full "Linn" trend as I really like the Linn/Origin Live Silver combination much better than my old Linn/Ittok one. My journeys at an end now - it's called an empty wallet!

Hi,

It looks like a US disc as it is on the Atlantic label. Genesis were on the Charisma label in the UK at the time.

Is it an original one?

It is indeed a US one: I suspect not an original (though it is definitely a platinum-plated version of the original disc)

Just joined the forum! Based in South Derbyshire, UK & currently off work with a bad back - so thoughts have turned away from photography & back to music & hifi for the time being.

Musical tastes very varied, so my system needs to cope with most musical styles. Also strapped for cash (not least because photography isn't a cheap hobby either), so I have challenged myself to get the best possible sound for the least money.

System:
Yamaha CDX993 (£70 ebay)
Rotel RC972 pre (£90 ebay)
Rotel RB971 power (£1.74 ebay) - rather a good bargain buy!!
Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo 3 (£82 ebay)
Thorens TD125 Mk 2 (£54 ebay) + Acos Lustre arm
Thorens TD160 + SME 3009 Mk 2 (parents - free)

Both turntables are in the loft due to lack of space in listening room.

Cables:
2 x Belden 19364 DIY mains cables
1 x home brewed mains cable using individually shielded cores of 5 x individually enamelled twisted 0.71mm copper, all braided a la TNT twisted snake.
1 pair NVA sound cords (CD to Pre) - about to be replaced by a pair of silver braided jobs (0.5mm wire x 3)
1 pair silver braided ebay cheapo interconnects (pre to power).
1 pair DIY solid copper speaker cables - same idea as Anti cables, but 1.5mm and using basic enamelled copper magnet winding wire.

Having played with a variety of cables both in my system and a friends, I am convinced as to the merits of getting the cabling right (which CAN be achieved on a budget if one is willing to read, experiment and do a bit of DIY) and that £n spent on the right cables can yield greater sonic advantages than the same £n spent on different electronics.

I hope to be able to join in with cabling discussions in due course!

My interim setup in Nicosia

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_N90ZvwSpWa8/S-GVqvi5acI/AAAAAAAAAlk/65K6INrBHXU/s640/IMG_1348.JPG

A brand new LG Full HD TV is driven by an old Shuttle PC running Windows XP. The DVI video output goes into the TV HDMI input and the audio goes by USB to by Beresofrd Caiman DAC which drives my rebuilt Quad 405-2 and by 25 year old MB Quart floorstanders that shipped without damage from UK.

The TV sits on a cabinet from the 1950s that came with the house.

On the right speaker you can see a Seimens hybrid DECT/IP phone that gives me free or cheap international calls.

BBC iPlayer only delivers TV to UK IP addresses, but £5 per month buys be a VPN connection

https://www.my-private-network.co.uk/

It works very well so I won't be spending £3000 on a 4m Sat Dish and I can take the Shuttle PC home - it has a DVB-S Tuner so I can use it as a PVR in Southampton.

I will come back with a HTPC with BluRay that will cost rather less than a MacMini.

??? http://www.asrock.com/nettop/overview.a … 20330HT-BD

http://www.overclock.co.uk/product/ASRo … 24826.html

For Radio and streaming ripped CDs I use my Squeezebox (which also feeds the Beresford Caiman). The conservatory at the back of the house has a Squeezebox Boom which is great for what it is. To my surprise it works on the WiFi Network through the thick stone walls of this old bungalow.

I also prefer to 'roll my own' using classic BBC type starquad cable, silver solder or crimped metal where possible, I'm not a huge fan of Teflon or PVC, preferring more organic materials like rubber, foil sheathed cable, lotsa air and hand braiding of signal cables.

Think that covers it for now, without mentioning the computers and visual kit either!

Exposure XVIs !!! You God :D

:D

Just got rid of a long-standing piece of foo (Russ Andrews Purifier Block) and installed a simple, well-constructed 8-gang mains distribution strip (supplied by Mark Grant). Honestly, it was the equivalent of turbo-charging the Exposures! There is a very noticable increase in dynamic "power", better bass control, and it becomes far easier to pick out detail. (I would say more detail, but I can only assume that there must have been mains noise blocking this previously).

It really is quite amazing: the sonic characteristics of the system remains the same, but the presentation is just far sharper (I don't mean bright). I can't believe how much the RA block must have been "sitting" on the dynamics, and how much I didn't need the filtering and "purifying" (oh, the irony...).

Lovely kit.

Those are the tallest speakers I've ever seen.

Hi Rob, all double stacked Acoustat's are 94 inches high each panel is 9x45 inches the smallest model is called the 1+1 one panel in the bottom ad one on top, the bigger one is the Spectra 8800 this model as four panels in the bottom and four on top, these speakers where made in the U.S.A. in the 80s then sold to the Italians then to China and now out of business, my friend buy's them used and rebuilds them.

I've got a Technics SUV 900 amplifier, a pair of TDL 0.75M speakers and QED speaker cables. I've separated from my hi-fi for 9 years but now I've bought a flat and I want to invest in a new hi fi. As I've got a large collection of CDs, I'm going to buy a Brennan JB7 and copy them all onto it's hard drive. For the moment I'm going to keep the TDL speakers with a view of upgrading them in the future. I listen to all sorts of music from classical to heavy metal, what speakers should I get? My budget is up to £1000,
Andy

I formerly listened with Acoustat Three model electrostats driven by Kenwood LO7 monoblocks and a Counterpoint SA5 preamp. Moving into a another house with a much smaller 12X15X8' room necessitated downsizing.

I opted for a pair of Meridian M20 active loudspeakers with aftermarket stands so that the MTM tweeters are nearer to my ear level and as my preamp was in need of repair, added an Audio Research LS7 line stage. I use the product that I manufacture to remove diffraction effects from my speakers' delivery.

I have two analog and one digital front end- A Nottingham Horizon SE with a modified Rega arm and a Grado Sonata Reference cartridge and a Micro Seiki BL91 with a Premier MMT arm and a first edition Koetsu Black MC. In the former I use a Monolithic phono pre and in the latter a Marcof battery powered MC step up tranformer. For digital playback I have a mid range Sony DVD player into a Bel Canto DAC2 by means of a KCI Pegasus digital cable*.

Interconnects are Morrow Audio MA3's*.

With DIP switches on the back plate of my Meridians, I have DEQX capability for balancing the output of my speakers to my room and tastes via the crossovers.

My most recent purchase and last component is a PI Audio UberBUSS power conditioner*.

As the Meridians are time and phase corrected in their crossovers and devoid of diffraction effects, depth of field and imagery is three dimensional and convincing of real instruments being played in real time and space. Tonality is wholesome top to bottom and the speakers go surprisingly low (-3db at 37kHz). Speaker placement within my room and nothing between where they are and my seat is also an important part of that. I sit at the apex of an equilateral triangle plus 4" to the legs between me and the plane of the speakers.

Whether a recording is made in a concert hall, in a club, or a one room shack in Mississippi, I'm there, too, just about every nite. Thanks.

*from manufacturers who sell direct about which there is discussion on www.audiocircle.com in the states.

After many years using Cyrus equipment and upgrading thorugh bi-amping and adding PSX-Rs, I invested in the following kit.
TEAC P1 CD Transport (secondhand)
Chord DSC1500E DAC with PULSE card
DNM PA3S Amp
Wilson Benesh Act 1 Speakers

I was using a DNM 3C-Six pre but took it out of the system this weekend as I've moved the record player to the secondary (Cyrus) system and all inputs are now digital.

It took ages to get the amp/speaker combination to achieve the tone and projection balance I was looking for; the DNM PA3S was the key to unlocking the ideal balance and despite the 23amp output it drives the Act 1s fine.

Just a few images of the mixture of kit I use and design, have yet to take shots of my Arcam gear as they are in a shameful Ikea cabinet, once they are sat atop a nice new glass AV rack I will oblidge!

The speakers are designs of mine, through my hobby site 8 ball audio. The round ones were an early design, using solid walnut, hand turned, and yes they do sound good!

The floorstanders use identical configurations internally, but one sports a fabric covered baffle, and the other a coloured acrylic skin.

Some revisions since the last time I posted on this thread, mostly at the front end:

Sources:
Digital - Foobar2000 on Acer Revo 'net-top' PC with Seagate 1TB Expansion drive (CDs ripped to flac), M2Tech Hi-Face USB-SPDIF, Monarchy Audio M22C custom DAC (no volume control, full implementation of 'piggyback' DAC chips)

Analogue - Thorens TD160(mk. 1) with OL dc motor, Rega RB250/OL counter-weight, Goldring 1022, Cambridge 640P phono stage

Pre:
Bent Audio NOH mk.3 TVC

Active XO:
Linkwitz Orion ASP/XO

Power Amps:
2 x DIY 5-channel chipamps

Speakers:
DIY Linkwitz Orion

Cables - various DIY
Room acoustics - DIY absorbtion panels to deaden the space behind the listening position
There's also a Rega headphone amp and Beyer phones (can't remember the number...DT540?)

Current goals: fit rear tweeters to the Orions and upgrade XO to Orion 3 spec.
Build a Twisted Pear Buffalo II DAC - mainly for the option of hi-res digital as it becomes more available, but also to hear how a more modern DAC compares to the aging but rather wonderful PCM63-based Monarchy

I will post some pics soon - never seem to get around to that bit. There are some old pics of the Orions here: http://s305.photobucket.com/albums/nn230/GordonJ_photos/Orion%20Build/

A couple of changes at Gromit Towers:

My little Thorens TD150 arrived on friday, so have spent the last couple of days (where possible - Mrs Gromit gave birth to a little girl on thursday) setting it up and spinning a few tunes. Works well, is in lovely condition, and doesn't sound half bad - nothing earth-shattering (not surprising when it's got a nigh-on 30 yr old Grado fitted) but very listenable nonetheless, in fact it reminds me of listening to an older-vintage LP12...strange that. ;)

Anyway - here it is, not ideally sited of course but it'll do until I get the Audiotech out of the garage...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e320/Gromit011/CRW_4474.jpg

Plans are to get a Series II 3009 (have one coming soon as it happens) and have managed to find an original SME-fit Thorens armboard for the 150. The last word in sonics isn't really the goal here, just something which is good to use, sounds fine and will be just nice to own.

Rest of the system is as it was, except I'm now using Avondale Blacklink speaker cable. Phonostage duties are courtesy of my Creek 4040s2, using the tape outs into the Exposure pre.

This will, if all goes to plan, be on the Thorens in a few weeks once the armboard's arrived. I've ordered up the new c/w stub rubber from SME and the arm's due to go off to Johnnie7 at AudioOrigami in the next week or so. It'll be a full re-wire, conversion to the right-angle SME arm wiring base, and a general once-over.

Thanks to Roger (TheMoon) for being such a top chap and getting the arm to me so quickly. It's a gorgeous piece of kit (that's the arm...not Roger...er I'll get my coat). :)

Nice bloke is Roger - been over to his place a couple of times and been introduced to ESL57's and some very old, and extremely fine valve amplifiers.

Really looking forward to getting the 3009 onto the Thorens - as I say I'm not expecting huge things, just something which is very listenable and nice to use. A bit of nostalgia in other words...although both the turntable and arm are about the same age as me. :D

The older Series II does seem to be thought of more highly than the later, Improved version. It's got twice the mass (about 13g as opposed to 6.5g) so should suit slightly more modern cartridges.

It is indeed - as I said above the new c/w stub de-coupling rubber's on order from SME which will put everything back in-line, once fitted. Refreshing that it was only about a tenner. :)

The arm's off to Audio Origami for a re-wire soon, where Johnnie will fit the right-angled output socket; at present the arm's too tall for the Thorens' plinth.

Hi Richard,,

Weren't you playing with a Techie again recently?

I was indeed Rob.

Sadly it's had to go. Why? I've had to spend out more than planned on some work I've had to do on my motorbike (it's my only transport, now we're living in the sticks, until we get a 2nd car) and my clarinets are in desperate need of an overhaul. I'd set myself some cash aside to start modding the Technics but that's all pretty much gone. I know the Tecchy can be made seriously good, it's just that I don't have the cash to throw at it now - out of the box it's a fairly decent turntable but...

...as standard the Thorens sounds a lot better - it needs a bit of work doing on the arm to get it to 100%; the pillar bearing needs replacing or adjusting - Johnnie's having a look at it for me. Once it's done it'll be as good as, probably better than new once the 45 yr old wiring's been replaced too. Then we'll sit down and have a look at further options.

I still want that P9....who knows, perhaps Lefty may sell me his P7 when he gets his 9 ;)

It does - only thing is that, strangely, it sounds better than the Sumiko HS12 and I don't have an SME shell.

The loathsome chore - redecoration; but it has given me the opportunity to tidy up the AV.

So:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_N90ZvwSpWa8/TW-o0kwv6tI/AAAAAAAAA0w/OYuzAcebpUY/s640/IMG_1381.JPG

That's it. Minimalism!

Open the door:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_N90ZvwSpWa8/TW-pJML-N7I/AAAAAAAAA1A/4XXtJpq31fY/s640/IMG_1383.JPG

The Quad 405 is facing back with its heat sink poking out of the back of the Ikea box.

Above you can see the Caiman DAC which takes optical in from the TV, RCA S/PDIF from the Squeezebox which sits in front of the TV, and there is a USB cable loose at the back of the TV in case I want to run the laptop straight into the DAC. There is is a long HDMI cable running along the skirting board. I pull it out from under the sofa and plug the laptop in to see BBC iPlayer content.

That will do for now. In the longer term I will put a small format PC on the back of the TV or in the Ikea box and use Remote Desktop to control it.

And looking down the room at my beautiful redecoration and the new carpet:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_N90ZvwSpWa8/TW-o0YKM2nI/AAAAAAAAA0s/3OMLWXf3KY0/s640/IMG_1379.JPG

The curtains have yet to be hung, but we do have shutters.

edit: Speakers moved.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_N90ZvwSpWa8/TXEbJZxlhcI/AAAAAAAAA2M/1ovctiESOao/s640/IMG_1391.JPG

This puts the power amp heat sink 1cm from the night store heater, so something will have to change before next winter!

Have recently replaced the monster cable stuff with my own DIY cables--a significant improvement!

The reason the speakers are so high (100cm) is that my listening position is my tall bed. The tweeters are aligned to my ears. I haven't got space for stands, I am self employed so I keep all my receipts and tax returns in those drawers and then some.

26th May 2011, 17:39
Hi Dev, yes they were bit of a gamble as i didn't know much about them when i bought them I knew i like the sound of the 300B but had not heard this amp I have had solid state amp in the past Exposure IV dual regulated then Parasound JC1 monoblocks so these are a bit of a change. These are the supposed speck's.
Dared DV-300B
MONO BLOCK POWER AMPLIFIER
(PARALLEL SINGLE-END CLASS A)

MAX OUTPUT POWER: 22W PER CHANNEL
FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 20-20KHz (±1.5dB)
DISTORTION: ≤2%
SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO: ≥86dB
INPUT SENSITIVITY: 500mV
INPUT IMPEDANCE: 100K ohm
OUTPUT IMPEDANCE: 4 ohm/8 ohm/16 ohm
SIZE: L495 X W260 X H180 MM /piece
WEIGHT: 30.0Kgs/pair
TUBES: 6N8P(6SN7)x4,300Bx4

I like the sound they produce but definately think i can improve on things a new cd player possibly but i am thinking of giving vinyl ago. I like to change things around to improve the sound like most of us. I have made a few mistakes in the past purchasing things that weren't quite, right that is one of the reasons for wanting to get more involved on the forum I feel that if I hear some more systems then I may make a more informed choice in my own set up. I am also looking forward to meeting more Hifi enthusiasts on a social basis.

Hi,

Having just joined I've been prompted to tell you about my kit.

I have only been 'into' HiFi for a little over two years now & have probably bought my kit in the wrong manner.

None of it was bought after listening to it & it was bought solely after reading up on HiFi items & reading reviews & putting 2 & 2 together & getting five.

There are very few HiFi shops close to where I live (West Yorkshire) who would demo/lend equipment, so I chose this route as I had to start somewhere & I wanted to buy everything secondhand as IMHO you get more bang for your buck.

So this is the kit I've ended up with over a two year period,

Esoteric SA60 universal disc player, Harman Kardon PA2400 power amp, Tag Mclaren PA20R preamp, Ruark Templar II speakers.

I have just bought a Systemdek IIX TT off Ebay & am now in the process of trying to find/buy a phono amp, again used if possible.

I've also amassed this equipment as well in the last two years,

Arcam Alpha 7SE
Denon DMD 1000

Stax SR-40
Teac R-H300
Toshiba SD900E

Would like to add a Reel to Reel to this list at some stage, money permitting.

The only problem I have is having a tiny listening space, 20' long x 8' wide & I can only get my speakers 5' apart at the max, not ideal I know, but I manage.

So there it is 'my kit', any comments good or bad are more than welcome as I'm here to learn.

Cheers,

Willie

PS, sorry no pics, but I haven't got a digital camera, yet!!

The room looks quite bare from a sound absorption point of view. I wouldn't be surprised if you find some notes of bass are noticeably louder than others, or the lower voice range can be a little boxy??

For some bed-time reading have a look at the acoustics articles here - http://www.audiosmile.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=40

Phono Stage - Trichord Dino
Digital Sources - Meridian 500 / 566.20 / Apple Airport Express
Amplifier - ATC SIA 2 - 150
Loud Speakers - ATC SCM 35

The old Sony CRT TV has just been relegated to the man cave. Even though its a bit in the way and the picture is not what it was, its still a nice tele and a shame to shove it in the loft (if I could lift it up there)!!!

A few changes to my system: a Trio L-07D, fully fettled by Vantage Audio in the UK, and a pair of dipole speakers - Jamo R909s:

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/TFP_2007/DSCF2407.jpg

It would be fair to say that the wife isn't that taken with the size and aesthetics of the Jamo's (understatement - she absolutely hates them). I'm going to work on the principle that, if they're there for a couple of months, you'll hardly notice them. It's worked for me in the past, but the R909s might be a tough call. Having said that, all my mates love them - obviously a bloke thing. You can see the now-dwarfed Neat MF7s hiding behind the left speaker.

They do, however, sound excellent. The bass quality certainly seems superior to the Neat's rear ported version, but it's early days yet to make definitive judgement calls. Must get a better camera though...

Looks great Mark.
Is the support stand part of the overall design?

YNMOAN
24th June 2012, 01:24
Thanks Rob :).

Yes, the stand is physically built into the plinth and helps to both reinforce it and define separate areas within it. The stand also guarantees the turntable a rigid, stable and predictable support. The suspension has been developed in such a manner that it resists footfall shock and, despite being three floors up and on a suspended wooden floor, the deck is extremely stable and the speakers woofers do not suffer from the pumping that is often seen.

Now I finally understand why there are so few women into hifi.

With the exception of a few tasteful- looking (and indisciminately so) systems such as Alco's above for eg, the majority I see are behemoth-laden lumps of 'man kit' overpowering decent, tasteful living-rooms. Interested as I am in hifi, blimey it seems the more costly it gets the more f'ugly business it all is. Add a huge black plastic flat-screen TV in the middle just to top it off (really, along with cruise ships the most vulgar items of design ever IMO) Im surprised wifey doesnt insist on a room exclusively for her shoes in recompense!

Kudos to those designers and buyers who realise hifi takes up room invariably in pride of house-space and as such are, like it or not, pieces of 'furniture'. Designers got this in the 50's and 60's. Come 1980 and.. oh dear never mind, its taken over the room!

The internet is just for po*n, shopping, telling inanities of you're day to face(book)less others, and blokes nerding about hobbies. and funny animal stuff of course.

..and Jesus died, for this?

Its all wrong I tells ya.

Hifi needs 'a good womanising' I think. Look, Alco's speakers are very purty lovely things in a fine space, but look what they're on- I mean why can't the designers have simply made those (ugly, sorry Alco) black pillars white for eg?

RobHolt
14th January 2013, 12:24
Bose, B&O, and now we even have Linn doing 'lifestyle' systems.

They rarely deserve the scorn received IMO, and most are fine on the electronics front but compromised (sometimes) by the loudspeakers.

And of course it has a much coveted TDA1541A S1 (single crown) DAC chip.

Wow, a really nice CD player! It even has a good transformer brand.

I think there is a lot to be said for those TDA1541 chips these days, even more than when they were current. They behave differently (less distortion) with digitally clipped signals than oversampling type converters.

Greetings from across the pond!

As a long-time member of the classicspeakerpages forum which is devoted to classic New England speakers, I was interested to find this forum, in "old" England.

Most Americans don't recognize my avatar but I suspect most members here will! As a DIYer I'm aspiring to Gromit's level of expertise but usually commit Wallace's goofs. I enjoy restoring vintage hi-fi equipment and have gone through a succession of speakers. My real passion is restoring KLH Model Eight tube radios.

Recognizing that we are separated by a common tongue, I'll describe my "kit" ("gear" to us Yanks) and post a couple of photos.

The vintage set-up:
This is as "all American" as possible:
McIntosh MAC4100 receiver, recapped per an AudioKarma thread
old Toshiba DVD player for playing CDs
AR-3 speakers restored and modified to 3a specs
VMP Larger subwoofer
MicroStatic supertweeters
a pair of AR-91 serve as extension speakers in the hallway. Too big but I have nowhere else to put them.

waiting in the wings: The Mac may be replaced by a DB Systems DB-1 preamp, an Adcom 555 amp, Scott 350 tube tuner. Also awaiting restoration is the AR XA turntable I bought new in 1969.

The home theater:
An "old" Pioneer 50" plasma
Onkyo TX-NR1008 receiver
Onkyo DX-C320 carousel CD player
Harman-Kardon T-60 turntable with Shure V-15 cartridge
Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Blu Ray
Cambridge Soundworks Newton sub
Main speakers: Cizek KA-1 in solid koa wood
Wide speakers: Minimus 7 with Zilch mod
rear surrounds: Cambridge Soundworks Ambiance in solid oak
rear: Cizek HTA in solid oak

I keep switching things around. "so many speakers, so little time and space".
Here are the KLH radios, AR-3 and Cizek KA-1 speakers. I resized them so they are all under 100KB but can't upload any more because I've exceeded my quota (?). Oh well.

:D

Yes, it's much safer (even has output protection ;) )

Neil at Albarry is a great guy to deal with too. The preamp is fabulous. Very low noise floor, very nicely designed. The power amps sound more valve-like than any previous valve amp I've had...they retain a creamy rich mid-band without sacrificing upper HF detail. They'll also driver very difficult loads and belie their modest 60w rating.

Speakers took a while for the better half to grant her approval...something to do with being 170 litres, 1.3m high and 80Kg....a little imposing!

Sorry for the mess, here is a photo of my hi fi. The jbl4312As aren't being used but are stacked on top of the Tannoys (System 12 DMT II) for lack of space. You can just see the project 1.2 turntable (lower left), and behind the speakers on the left is a computer with RME interface. Underneath the turntable behind the half-open door is a little mixer, the make of which shall remain nameless along with the phono preamp. There is a Sunfire Signature power amp on top of the left column, and another pair of monitors, Yorkville-something-or-anothers, again hidden, behind the Tannoys. Waiting for the Crofts to arrive and working on a new cartridge for the pro-ject.
This situation will improve....

Hi my system is as follows: Michell Gorbe TT with Origin Live Illustrious arm and Benz Micro low cartridge with trichord dino mk2. digital is Musical Fidelity KW sacd. Pre is Cyrus 7 with Cyrus psu. Power is 4 Cyrus mono x bi amping Gershman Avant Ggarde florstanders these are a Canadian 3 way speaker. Iam fairly happy with the system but I think I need more punch and dynamics from my TT. Iam considering changing my cartridge buying secondhand say around 700 to 800. Iam wondering will this give me what Iam after or do I need to change my phono amp or both? I listen to most music but pop. I like a bit of rock but, mainly acoustic, jazz, classical, folk, occasionaly electronic. Any suggestions much appreciated.
